Happy birthday, me. 22 years and counting. My parents got me Primer and An Anthropologist On Mars — mad kudos to them. I sent them my Amazon wish list and they picked those off of the list. Was a really sweet way to make it easy for them to get me stuff. I’m looking forward to watching/reading them both. I’ve already seen Primer twice and I still don’t have much of an idea as to what’s going on.
Sorry for the lack of postings, also. I’ve become somewhat of a web developer and busy with other stuff lately, so I haven’t posted anything on here. Granted, it would be just as easy to spend 5 minutes to say “stuff happened, I’ve been busy, thanks for reading” once in awhile, but that would be less interesting. I also apologize for the long titles, but… well… they’re funny, and I like them.
Work’s been interesting. I’m still getting a feel for the bureaucracy that envelops pretty much everything around here (it’s a process, we have to have meetings about it, let’s discuss this, what team gets this requirement, what about the line items, etc.). It’s definitely not laid back COSI style: “this is sweet, let’s do it.” Which I miss, in many respects. I wonder if working for a smaller company would mean less of this kind of red tape, but then again I dunno if you can escape it entirely. I’m (hopefully) getting towards the end of the work I’ve been doing for the past few months. I’m definitely looking forward to working on something besides installers.
As for the web development thing — I mentioned a few posts ago that I’ve been playing WoW. It’s a fun game, and it lets me keep in contact with some friends I don’t get to see very often. Which is good. Unfortunately, most of the people that play don’t know much about… well… computers. They can play the game to the end of the earth and kick my butt from here to tomorrow doing it, but if they want to set up a webpage they’ve got nothing. So I’ve become something of their webmaster. Really all I did was setup Wordpress, phpBB, and Gallery for them and do some CSS theming to make them look consistent, but as of late I’ve been working on some PHP/MySQL apps to help keep everybody organized. Some of the end game content requires 40 people to all show up in the right place at the right time, so I’m working on some stuff to help facilitate that. Maybe I’ll clean it up and OSS it or some-such. Though I’d probably get made fun of, since I’m still not as familiar with PHP as I should be.
I’ve been lacking in good movies the past few months. The only two I’ve seen lately are Serenity (very good, though rushed) and Wallace and Gromit (quite funny… not sure if I’ll look at “produce” the same way again). I keep meaning to see Layer Cake, but I haven’t gone out to rent it yet. I’ve been catching up on my Scrubs and Firefly DVDs, though.
Also, I’m starting to get a feel for the apartment market around these parts, so if you have ideas as to what to look for/what’s good in the Boston area (especially western Boston), lemme know.
